John and Carol Matlock met more than 50 years ago using what was then a fairly new dating technique. Photo courtesy Carol Matlock hide caption. Back in the early ’60s, computer dating was a pretty new idea. Only a handful of services existed and they used massive computers — the size of an entire room — to calculate compatibility. But John Matlock and his future wife, Carol, both decided to take a chance on the new technology. I did call one of the girls. Was not successful in getting a date with her.

Teenagers in the ‘s are so iconic that, for some, they represent the last generation of innocence before it is “lost” in the sixties. When asked to imagine this lost group, images of bobbysoxers, letterman jackets, malt shops and sock hops come instantly to mind. Images like these are so classic, they, for a number of people, are “as American as apple pie. Because of these entertainment forums, these images will continue to be a pop cultural symbol of the ‘s.

For these reasons and others, my friend Megan O’Brien, a successful woman in her own right as the founder of the marketing agency Beauty Brander, almost exclusively dates men in their sixties and older. We recently attended a wedding in Palm Springs together, a fancy affair with pool parties, fireworks, and a ceremony at the Empire Polo Club where they host the Coachella music festival. I’m 33, Megan is 37, and the majority of the guests who were not relatives of the bride or groom fell somewhere squarely in between.
Recently recovering from a relationship with a year-old celebrity plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, Megan arrived to the wedding weekend licking her wounds, only to immediately be courted by the year old uncle of the groom. Alas, it wasn’t to be for Megan and Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack was away somewhere in France, but the mother of the groom put the kibosh on the whole thing.

Handwritten original research documents relating to the first known identification of the Zika virus have been uncovered at the University of Glasgow’s Archive. The papers, which include hand-drawn graphs, annotated mosquito catch tables and slides depicting the forests in Uganda, where the virus was originally found, previously belonged to Professor Alexander Haddow — a key member of the investigative team who originally discovered the Zika virus.
The find, hailed as one of the most exciting discoveries in the university’s archives, has revealed details of the first time researchers found the Zika virus in mosquitos. Professor Haddow donated the contents of his own personal archive, which also includes papers on yellow fever and his own sketches on Scottish art motifs along with papers relating to his study of traditional Scottish Music, to the university at the end of his life. Eleanor Tiplady, who is carrying out a three month internship during her Immunology PhD supported by the BBSRC Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council in order to study the Haddow archives, said: “We have been amazed by the caliber and volume of material we have found in the Haddow archive.
It’s been particularly interesting to read work on Zika — which he doesn’t view as a particular threat at that time. Today the University of Glasgow continues to undertake significant research into the Zika outbreak, including studying the virus, working on vaccines and examining the links between Zika and Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Source: The New Yorker , February 14, , cover. By the early s, mainframes had crept into the popular consciousness through news reports and advertising. They were still poorly understood by the public at large, and many people were unsure about what these new machines could actually do, as well as what sorts of tasks they should do. By the s, popular discourse on technological change highlighted concerns that computers would eventually take over most intellectual tasks, and perhaps even more than that.
The flip side of these fears about what computers might do was the fact that early computers still required an enormous amount of labor in order to successfully and completely run programs. Early mainframes were prone to breakdowns and human labor was a key part of the fiction of effortless automation represented in the popular press. The operators who made this possible in the Anglo-American world tended to be women.
The idea that these masculine-identified machines might sexually harass women workers as proxies for real men often figured into jokes and cartoons of the era see cartoon below.

The all-important first date isn’t easy. And yet traditional dates are held up as a romantic ideal, the kind the older generation desperately wants Millennials to learn so much so that a Boston College professor is teaching a course on it. There’s just one problem: The “classic first date” is bullshit, because there has never been one standard for it. Case in point: all of history. Dating is actually a pretty recent phenomenon, in the grand history of civilization.
It wasn’t until the 19th century that launching a relationship had anything to do with love and attraction. Courtship, to put it in old-timey terms, then became a part of the mating process. That eventually led to dates. But even then, they didn’t always fit one mold. As history shows us, dating didn’t really exist before the 19th century, at least not in the United States. Back then, many marriages were facilitated by parents with the goal of finding their child a spouse that could physically help in maintaining the family home or bear children.
In cases where the there was no formal arrangement, children were still expected to choose someone who would be beneficial to the family think: Pride and Prejudice , decided after a courtship void of touching and sexual thoughts. Men weren’t permitted anywhere in the hotel except the lobby. They say it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind. When it came to dating , that was certainly my motto. I had lots of chutzpah when I was in my teens and twenties, evidenced by several of my dates. If it was someone I hadn’t dated before, I’d ask a friend to answer my phone and tell him I was away from my room for a minute. Then I’d race to the mezzanine and carefully peek over the railing so I could see him, but he couldn’t see me.
If I liked what I saw, I’d go back to my room, grab my purse, and meet him in the lobby. If I changed my mind, I’d go back to my room or leave the hotel through the coffee shop. One time as I was coming back to the hotel through the coffee shop, the date confronted me. But it still didn’t stop me from doing it over and over again. I certainly have a ton of stories about dashing from dates, and here’s some of the best:.
I fixed up a friend and we had dates with two guys who were roommates.
